Review of A Dog's Purpose (2017) by Tracy B — 02 Feb 2017
Whenever I see a movie review and the critic (or moviegoer) says, "I laughed, I cried and I cheered," I usually throw up my arms in disgust and cynically groan, "Oh, come on!" But last night I (finally) was able to go see the movie "A Dog's Purpose (based on the book by the same name by W.
Bruce Cameron, screenplay by Bruce Cameron and Cathryn Michon), and I didn't just laugh; I howled. I didn't just cry; I sobbed. and I didn't just cheer, I actually threw my arms around the person sitting next to me and we both grinned like idiots.
I happen to be a dog person and have loved and lost several dogs, most recently the one that I raised alongside my two children, so this movie struck a particularly personal chord for me, as I imagine it has for anyone who has loved and lost their best friend.
And while the movie did briefly tap into that overwhelming sadness that we all feel when that moment comes, it is also so filled with love and hope and unmitigated joy, that you will absolutely leave filled with such a sense of profound gratitude for having had the experience of having a dog that you will go home and allow the dog that you forbid from climbing on the furniture to sleep in your bed with you, just like I did last night!
