Review of A Dog's Breakfast (2007) by Michelle R — 18 Jan 2008
David Hewlett (writer, director and star) plays the neurotic lead, Patrick, who lives in his parents' house - although they're long gone - with his dog, Mars. He stays home all the time, in fact, never leaves the property. His sister comes to visit and brings along her new fiancé so they can meet. This of course makes things difficult for Patrick as an over-protective brother and as someone who follows a rigid routine every day. Patrick tries to make these problems go away but things don't go as planned..

I hate giving away any part of a movie in a review so I'm keeping silent on the details. I might write a separate "spoilerific" review though so I can comment on a very funny scene involving Vaseline..

The first half of this movie was very, very funny. I'm still chuckling at a couple of the scenes. David Hewlett can do a great scream and he got to show off that skill several times, much to my amusement. I was thoroughly entertained although the second half of the movie was definitely weaker when it lost its unpredictability. It was still a great laugh and I definitely recommend it. Even when I could see things coming I was still enjoying the performances. I hope David Hewlett continues to write and star in more comedies like this. He's wonderful at portraying angry, bumbling characters. .
