Review of A Dog's Breakfast (2007) by Shane N — 23 Jun 2009
This movie is quite literally a Tour De Force by David Hewlett. He manages to pull off the 'triple-threat' that is so rare these days, and makes it look effortless in the process.
In addition to David this film also showcases two of my other favorite actors, the great Paul McGillion, and of course David's sister Kate Hewlett. David and Kate have always demonstrated amazing screen chemistry in their sibling roles, both on Stargate: Atlantis, and now in A Dog's Breakfast.
Kate and Paul make a very believable couple as well. The pure energy between all of the actors is definitely part of what makes the comedy in this nothing short of brilliant. You can tell this is a group of actors who are very familiar with each other and know how to hit the high notes just right.
The boldest and best choice I think in this film is that no one is afraid to play it over the top, while still keeping it very grounded. I personally find it easy to identify with the character of Patrick. I could see myself saying and doing the things he is doing just out of sheer panic. There are definitely some amazing twists, most of which I didn't see coming. I found that to be a rare treat.
I also enjoyed the cameo appearances (including an amazing Chris Judge scene) by members of the Stargate family.
I truly hope David makes another film using the amazing comedic ability he has been gifted with.
