Review of A Dirty Shame (2004) by Kimeee H — 23 Oct 2004
A DIRTY SHAME.
EXPECTATION: 7.
END RESULT: 8.
in a sentence --
John Water's is back and as 'dirty' as ever, and I for one would like to keep him that way..
John Water's is back, with his first new movie since Pecker, and he's back to his old self. Many critics panned this movie, but what I'd like to know is what they were comparing it to? John Water's is only comparable to other John Water's movies. There's no other, and with A Dirty Shame, John comes back around to his old self. Not Serial Mom self but Desperate Living self and that's the John I love.
The casting is fun, with some of John's oldies but goodies (Mink Stole and Pattie Hearst) and with some new meat. Selma Blair makes a turn as the mondo-breasted exhibitionist daughter of Tracy Ullman's character. Johnny Knoxville's Ray-Ray is hilarious but I think John could have gone further with the character. Suzanne Shepherd's Big Ethel is the impitomy (sp?) of unsexy and conservative. But my favorite character was Dingy Dave played by James Ransone. He brings dirt to a whole new level.
Even without all the potty humor and silly sight gags, the movie gets a 10 in my book for the 'Hokey Pokey' scene. A scene that will forever pop into my head when I hear it.
