Review of A Dirty Carnival (2006) by Chun Ling H — 12 Jun 2009
The Korean gangster film has evolved over the last decade and in its own way has become cliched by the caricatures and undertones relating to Korean society. This may not be the best in the genre and doesn't cover much new ground in portraying the aspirations of a gangster, but it scratches the surface a little more deeper on contemporary societal issues.
The plot bears many similarities to the Song Neung-han's 1997 cult classic "No. 3" without the dark satirical and humourous moments, and the complication between old friends Byung-Doo (Jo) and Min-Ho (Min) and "John Gotti" wannabe boss who wants a movie made about him suggests some form of influence from "Get Shorty" (once again minus the parody).
Level of hardcore violence in this is on par with others in the genre.
