Review of A Dirty Carnival (2006) by Steve W — 07 Aug 2012
While ADC treads a theme-worn path (gangster with a heart of gold struggles to escape The Life), it more than makes up for it in acting excellence, eye candy-coated visuals and wince-inducing fight sequences.
Less emotional than Woo's syrupy concoctions, ADC nevertheless extracts believably sympathetic performances from its two leads as the couple whose unlikely romance is ultimately shattered by murderous gangland violence.
A tad long at almost two and a half hours, director Ha Yu (and writer Yoo Ha) still keep the pace tight and the dialogue short and simple. Stars also for the wardrobe, music, fight choreography and cinematography.
Recommended.
