Review of A Death in the Gunj (2016) by Abhishek T — 12 Jun 2017
Certainly not a masterpiece but a laudable debut effort makes it for necessary viewing. The style of direction reminded me of old school Hitchcock mixed with Fincher,. Hitchcock due to simplicity yet assurance of camera, tight close ups of characters yet wide-angle situating shots of the location as if location itself is a character in the plot as well as a slow, palpable build of suspense.
The Fincher in this is clearly the character driven plot with subtexts and subtlety coupled with realistic madness of action. The acting in the movie is fantastic and for that alone, it is worth the watch.
What the movie did lack was a powerful punch or continuous engagement. It was too end-heavy despite being highly character driven.
