Review of A Day Off (1968) by Jesse L — 20 Feb 2004
(VHS) (First Viewing, 7th Cukor film).
What a fantastic film! Holiday is not the screwball comedy I expected, instead being a rather poignant look at how the conventional tries to make the individual conform. Beautiful performances from Grant and Hepburn, and Lew Ayres gives a heartbreaking performance as the son who covers his shortcomings with champagne. A total surprise- truly an underrated treasure from George Cukor.
