Review of A Cure for Wellness (2017) by Alex L — 19 Feb 2017
So the trailer was nothing compared to the movie, it undersold it, made it look like a regular, overdone, cheesy asylum movie. We went to see it only because it was this or Rings (in terms of horror movies), and my husband hates ghost films. I was disappointed by the ratings this got and was not looking forward to it, BUT, it was fantastic and the end left both of us completely satisfied, all questions were answered, which is rare in thriller movies we've seen.
My husband is overwhelmingly critical of movies and tries to point out mistakes/cheesy effects but there was only one (the deer scene) where he said it looked CGI/fake. I'm more mellow and enjoy the plot, and I haven't seen a horror film this fantastic in YEARS.
The concept is amazing, original, and raw. Everything now is just remakes of old shit, nothing new, nothing interesting about characters and the scenery is the same (woods, camp, lake, old house, hospital, etc) but this was a unique mix of 1800's castle and modern sanitarium/retirement home. It was so well created that I had absolutely no questions that were left unanswered, like in most other psychological thrillers. The acting was phenomenal and the effects were great and went well with the story (not just added to build interest/distract from lack of depth). The gore scenes/deaths were extremely powerful and shook me to my core many times (the dentist, the bed scene, the deer scene, and the specimen scenes) and the new approach to fusing science and horror and lore was fantastic.
That being said, I'm surprised this movie has such bad reviews. Maybe the critics didn't like the overall message of the movie.
