Review of A Coffee in Berlin (2012) by Renee L — 05 Feb 2015
No. No. No. The critics got this wrong. They are in love with black & white films made in Berlin, but believe me, this is no "Wings of Desire" Wim Wenders' masterpiece. The protoganist (at least we're supposed to take his side) is an immature jerk who mistreats friends, family, coffee clerks, a chubby childhood classmate, and a rather pathetic new neighbor.
Tell me, what are the positives in his favor that should make us care about him? OK, MAYBE I felt a little sorry for how he goes through nearly an entire day with 4 failed attempts at getting his first cup of coffee.
But, when his father gives him a little money, he spends it on vodka, so I no longer had empathy for him. It doesn't help that he has the face of a weasel. This is like that totally burnt, stale coffee that you get in New Jersey diners, sloppy and undrinkable.
Skip this one if you have any sense and self-respect.
