Review of A Cock and Bull Story (2005) by Jonathon N — 30 Aug 2008
You know how sometimes it seems like whenever youâ??re expecting a film to be good it sucks, but when you have no expectations you get pleasantly surprised? No surprises here: everyone said it was great, and it was.
Iâ??m motivated to systematically pursue contemporary British cinema (fat chance though in QC). Based on the 1760 (!) novel by Laurence Sterne, which Iâ??m now planning to read, the film is ostensibly the story of Tristramâ??s life, but the narrative is structured in a fantastically non-linear way that wanders into faux behind-the-scenes territory by way of a variety of techniques, including having actors address the camera directly both in character and out, as well as in alternate characters, discontinuous editing, etcâ?¦.
