Review of A Cock and Bull Story (2005) by Brad S — 04 Jan 2007
It's a Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon film about them making a film about a book about writing a book. It didn't work in my opinion. Stephen Fry turned up in the middle of the film to explain about the book and if it wasn't for his 30-second piece, I would have thought the film was terrible. Apparently the book sounded like a Ronnie Corbett joke, where he's telling a joke but keeps on interrupting himself to go off on tangents and tells other stories at the same time. The difference being that Ronnie Corbett does end up telling the story and the punch line. The film missed out by not having a story or a punch line and just seemed to end before anything actually happened. It had funny parts, not laugh out loud funny but slightly humorous. The entire story line was done in Stephen Fry's bit and the rest of the film was an extended Rob Brydon show.
I think the problem was that I'm more of a book fan than films and if I read a book without a story line then I would be most disappointed. It was for the same reason that I didn't like Lost in translation. Yes, it was nice enough to look at but I couldn't get into looking at pretty colours but nothing much else happening.
