The Kubrick films I love connect with human emotion in an inhuman world (Spartacus, Lolita the first part of Full Metal Jacket, The Shining and Eyes Wide Shut). Just like Dr Strangelove I couldn't relate to this film, despite admiring its bravery and flair.
The whole thing comes across as one big cartoon (McDowell's performance certainly suggests that) so I can't see why the public and critics took it so seriously. Certainly there is a strong edge of humour in the whole thing and it seems to me that Kubrick was fanning the flames of controversy by banning it.
It stands up to repeated viewing because Kubrick has laced it with much to admire (the visuals, soundtrack, strong mad performance from McDowell) but it's not really to my liking.
