It bores me that critics (and I don't mean to name-drop but Cronenberg is among them) dismiss Kubrick as a "cold-hearted" director, offering little moral density to his characters. Perhaps the ideology he is working with is amoral, and the "ultraviolence" unsettling, but Kubrick's direction - combined with titillating dark comedy and a pristine score - is at its finest in this film.

The critique is entirely suiting of the decade: crime cannot be solved simply by conditioning. Although Kubrick cannot solve this issue due to remaining (mostly) faithful to the original source, he expands on the ultimately conservative political critique by showing us how all people with a political agenda seem to only want to manipulate us.

This will remain a classic for years to come.
