Review of A Clockwork Orange (1971) by Chiek E — 09 Nov 2015
The powers of association between Beethoven´s ninth symphony and the repulsive can be a powerful behavioural modifier if one loves Beethoven´s music but forced to associate it with gruesome images. Brilliant and eccentric Kubrick treated us yet again with a mind bending film of orange craziness.
Colourful arty decor and laughable character in humorous situations made this story of crime and rehabilitation incredibly engrossing. This film introduced us to a young and clearly talented Malcolm McDowell who played the diabolical character who would be transformed.
The role seemed to have spawned his years of acting roles in diabolical characters. Apart from stunning visuals, just like his use of classical piece Strauss' Blue Danube in his space masterpiece 2001, used Beethoven´s 9th in Clockwork Orange with great effect to drive his narration of this unforgettable story.
