Review of A Civil Action (1998) by Pif E — 17 Dec 2007
While Julia Roberts was receiving critical acclaim (and an Oscar) for playing real-life crusader Erin Brokovitch, John Travolta was largely ignored in a similar role doing an even finer job in a braver movie.
Travolta is brilliant as Jan Schlichtmann, an ambulance chasing attorney who discovers a conscience when he takes on a corporation responsible for several deaths through the contamination of drinking water, a pursuit that taxes his resources and threatens his livelihood.
Features an excellent supporting cast including William H. Macy, Tony Shaloub, a pre-Sopranos James Gandolfini, and Sydney Pollack in an Oscar worthy cameo as a deceptively slick corporate lawyer.
