Review of A Christmas Story (1983) by Trevor R — 05 Apr 2014
No movie better captures the sheer wonder of what it's like to be a kid. Endlessly quotable, the script is both nostalgic and timeless, and is totally owned by the brilliant Peter Billingsley. He perfectly balances heartfelt sincerity and fourth-wall-breaking awareness-- it's a tightrope of comedy, and he absolutely nails it. Darren McGavin also delivers one of my all time favorite performances as the Old Man, but it may be Melinda Dillon as Ralphie's mother that inhabits the most complex and revelatory role of the film.
This is a great film about growing up, about wants and needs, about family and learning that parents are people too. My appreciation and love for this movie increases upon every viewing. A favorite.
