Review of A Christmas Story (1983) by Danny R — 14 Dec 2015
Bob Clark's enchanting and endearing film that has become a modern Christmas classic, adapted from humorist Jean Shepherd's delightful memoir of growing up in 1940s Indiana. The story concerns a young boy named Ralphie Parker, superbly played by the adorable Peter Billingsley in a absolutely priceless performance who dreams and wants nothing more than a Red Ryder, 200 shot, BB rifle for Christmas, But his loving and overprotective Mother does not what him to have it because she thinks that he'll "shoot his eye out.
" Shepherd who narrates the film does a wonderful job with some truly charming and amusing narration. Beautifully acted by the entire cast with Melinda Dillion's sweet performance as Mother and the late great Darren McGavin's brilliantly funny scene-stealing performance as the Old Man, Ian Petrella shines as Ralphie's little brother Randy, Zach Ward is very memorable as the villainous Scut Farkus, the yellow-eyed big bully.
Exquisitely directed by the late Clark, who gives his film a wonderful period flavor and a great sense of nostalgia; it is also rib-tickling and hilarious for both kids and adults, another plus for this film is the splendid cinematography by Reginald H.
Morris. A good natured family film that becomes better with repeated viewings. Highly Recommended.
