Review of A Christmas Horror Story (2015) by Nell A — 24 Dec 2016
Is it the pinnacle of cinema? God no. But it's so entertaining. And it gets the horror anthology sub-genre so right - the pace is fantastic. One thing that generally bothers me about horror anthologies (horror movies consisting of several small stories) is the pace - one story is better than the other and the good ones slow the bad ones down.
This one cuts between the stories, successfully. Some stories are still better than others, but you don't lose focus. There are also some legitimately interesting characters in these stories - they aren't cardboard cutouts for their stories, they are people.
And there are legitimate scares - I jumped out of my seat several times (they were not false jumpscares so that's good). Definitely recommend this if you enjoy horror - it won't blow your mind but it's definitely a fun way to spend 2 hours of your life! The movie poster and trailer don't really do it justice - there is legitimate horror in this movie, it is not all jokes.
