Review of A Christmas Carol (1984) by J D — 06 Dec 2016
What's sad is that I always enjoy a retelling of "A Christmas Carol" but I've never read the damn book. Oh well. I remember watching this as a kid, and it actually was pretty scary. The ghosts are all very ghostly, and the Ghost of Christmas Future, with that rattling horn of a voice, petrified me.
Actually, the use of sound is used to great effect here with the appearance of each ghost, and it really does feel like a scary movie at times, which is pretty cool for what would seem an innocuous Christmas tale.
George C. Scott IS Ebenezer Scrooge. He's the perfect choice in this role, not playing it broad as has been done in other renditions, and it makes his transformation that much more joyous because he feels like a real person.
A wonderful, beautifully made production with great performances all around, with one of Scott's best roles. I love it!
