Review of A Bronx Tale (1993) by Javor B — 11 Jun 2011
A Bronx Tale tells the coming of age story of Calogero, a young Italian boy raised in the New York Bronx who has two very different father figures watching out for him. One is his strict birth father (Robert De Niro), a low paid bus driver who doesn't want his only son to become involved in the wave of crime tainting the neighborhood. The other is the local Mafia Kingpin Sonny (Chazz Palmintieri), who develops a bond with the boy when he refuses to rat on him following a murder in the street. As he grows up, he finds himself torn between these two distinct heroes who both love the boy while violence in the neighborhood threatens all of them. At one stage, Calogero asks Sonny if it is better to be loved or feared. He answers to the effect that it is better to be loved, but that in his position, he chooses to be feared. "It lasts longer".
The film draws you in from the very beginning and is beautifully shot giving the viewer a real insight into what it was like in 60's New York. The story line has interesting drama and some quality lessons baked in too.
The film was written by Chazz Palminteri and he also stars in the movie and Robert De Niro does a Fantastic job as the director. Loved the cameo by Joe Pesci .
