Review of A Brighter Summer Day (1991) by Ed A — 28 Dec 2010
A more comprehensive Stand By Me. And when I mean comprehensive, I mean four frickin' hours! Not for the restless spirit. Although, the narrative trots along quite quickly. You will be surprised when you check your watch as the credits roll up.
A humanistic portrait of an interesting political and social time in Taiwan's history when political parties split the country in half creating a murky oppression of paranoia in the air for it's innocent citizens. Loved the Barbershop quartet pop music and adolescent rites of passage. Yang is a true master.
