Review of A Bridge Too Far (1977) by Andrew L — 10 Aug 2007
Film is epic in scale, and is focused more on field officer level antics rather than idiotic constant action for a change. This is one of the few films made about ww2 that holds some semblance of historical accuracy; neither the allied airborne or the SS Armored infantry (who are portrayed as men, not as monsters) are depicted in an exaggerated fashion. The battle itself was fought with dignity and mutual respect; even the vaunted SS-Panzergrenadiers of the 9th/10th SS (who would later liquidate and wipe out the entire british 1st airborne) did not commit war crimes and even allowed peroidic ceasefire to bring the wounded british to the red cross.
It is certainly a rare film in a day and age where pro-americanism and demonization of the enemy is standard fare.
