Review of A Boy and His Dog (1975) by Imgonnaget S — 26 Jun 2010
This film was something different, an oddball dark apocalyptic comedy that's as unpredictable as it is reckless. If films that feature a desert apocalyptic wasteland, telepathic dogs, evil but horny women, and a little bit of grit are your thing, then I would recommend checking out this film.
I watched this on a whim, allured by the mushroom cloud with a happy face on the cover and a plot summary that sounded as if it was a write up of some off-market porno. Needless to say I couldn't resist. But to my and my buddy's surprise what ensued was less than a laughably bad cult film and actually an engrossing story with characters as lovable as they are unique.
This is a film in the vein of the Mad Max trilogy; it has the look, the quirkiness, and the violence of the latter. The world on display is visceral yet compellingly surreal, not hindered at all by the low production budget. The script is taught and the direction smooth, and the ending, well, let's just say that it's to die for. Seriously, one of the greatest endings ever. Nuff' said.
I enjoyed this film and I hope you will too. If it's not your cup of tea, it's only 90 minutes long.
