Review of A Boy and His Dog (1975) by Al M — 04 Aug 2010
A Boy and His Dog is pure B-movie gold: a post-apocalyptic comedy/thriller about a young man (played by an almost adolescent Don Johnson) and his dog who psychically communicates with him, often in a berating and hilarious fashion.
In this dynamic duo, the dog is far smarter than the boy, and the two's existence basically consists of searching for two things: food and sex. Set in a Road Warrior type post-nuclear holocaust landscape, A Boy and his Dog follows the pair as they move from one surreal scenario to another--from attempted rapes to post-apocalyptic movie theaters to a fascist underground utopia, the film becomes increasingly insane until its utterly brilliant and hysterical final scene.
A true classic of science fiction and independent filmmaking, A Boy and his Dog is a must see for fans of dark humor or any film that goes completely against the grain of mainstream cinema.
