Review of A Bigger Splash (2015) by Phil D — 30 May 2016
I loved this movie, but in that was at odds with a number of my fellow viewers. I saw it at my local art house (The Grand Cinema in Tacoma, WA), where there was a discussion led by a college English professor. She explicitly did not like it: "Two men fighting over a woman? Come ON! There's nothing new here..." Nor did a number of older folks around the table, however they seemed a bit ruffled by it's dissolute, post rock career sensuality.
To be sure, there's a certain amount of fucking in the movie - to enjoy the film, you've got to accept that as part of the plot. Given the fact that a couple of these characters were rock megastars, the sex and any other sensuality seem pretty mild in light of their past experiences. Wildly creative, emotionally intelligent, and slightly dissolute love triangle played out on a volcanic island near Corsica. Brilliant, I say. Check it out.
