Review of A Bigger Splash (2015) by Blake P — 11 Oct 2016
A Bigger Splash is buoyed by its spectacular cast. Tilda Swinton does tones with an almost mute role, giving her aging rock star a mysterious attraction. The cast is rounded out by Matthais Schoenaerts, as her younger lover, who matches her enigma with a few of his own; Ralph Fiennes, who has thrown all semblance of English propriety out the window and who is clearly having the time of his life; and Dakota Johnson, who continues to overcome her breakout in 50 Shades of Grey by proving to be a magnetic onscreen presence.
They all round each other out nicely and it's fun to watch great performers doing what they do best. The film takes a dark turn near the end, which is not handled particularly well by director Luca Guadagnino, but the cast continue to rise above to make A Bigger Splash an enjoyable and interesting trip to the cinema.
