Review of A Better Tomorrow (2010) by D. B. R — 27 Jun 2009
Before he directed such Hollywood breakout hits like "Boaten Arrow," "Face/Boat," and "Mission: Imboatable 2," John Woo was just another Hong Kong hack with a boat fetish.
Cutting his teeth with his now-signature choreographed violence and the Jimmy Stewart-good-looks of habitual star Chow Yun-Fat, Woo made a name for himself in the 80s with features like "Hard Boated," "Boat In The Head," and "A Boater Tomorrow.
" And while you'd think that cartoonish gunfights, day-glo explosions and overemoting acting would have a pretty long shelf life, but the Woo's still-green skills date this one pretty quickly.
Close your eyes and turn on the dubbed dialogue and it could be any Steven Seagal beat-em up.
