Review of A Better Tomorrow (2010) by Ty F — 14 Jul 2010
This is hands down my favorite John Woo movie. To understand the power that this movie had over Hong Kong, here's a little fact for you: this movie was released in the summer. It was instantly all the rage to wear the trench coat and chew on a wooden match just like Chow Yun Fat did in this movie.
Guys were sweating their balls off in the sweltering heat of Hong Kong, wearing trench coats and chomping on matchsticks, and I guarantee you none of 'em was as cool as Mr. Chow Yun Fat. We don't have a movie star that even compares to him.
We gotta go back to McQueen and Bogart. Yeah, he is that cool. We used to see these movies at a great theater in Berkeley, and a friend of mine once took in a clicking counter so he could try and keep track of how many people Chow shot in this one, he literally could not push his finger down fast enough to keep up with the onslaught in the finale.
What more could you want?
