Review of A Better Tomorrow (2010) by Alex R — 25 Dec 2010
Absolutely loved it.
The third john woo movie I have given 5 stars, the other two being the killer and hard boiled, this is a fantastic example of, maybe not a pure action movie, but a gripping and emotional story with some crazy action thrown in here and there.
I dont know why some people liked the somewhat silly but still fantastic sequel more, but it doesnt matter. a better tomorrow delivers.
Not forgetting this is the movie that made john woo and chow yun-fat superstars. although he is not the main character, chow is the highlight of the film. his performance is second to none, and cemented him as my favorite actor of all time. a better tomorrow is very, very stylish. people in sun glasses and trench coats blowing away menacing bad guys in beautiful slow motion which is best described as "balletic destruction.".
The story is what we have come to expect from woo. the themes of honor, loyalty, brotherhood and betrayal are as abundant here as they are in the killer or bullet in the head.
The action is fantastic too, with a fantastic action scene at the end. although there isnt as much action as most of woos later movies had, it is equally as satisfying.
The film that started it all for john woo and chow yun-fat, this is still among woos best work and is recommended to ANYONE who likes a great movie.
