Review of A Better Tomorrow (2010) by Rory G — 17 Feb 2006
Without this film, there would be no Reservoir dogs, pulp fiction, the matrix, sin city, etc. Well all those films may have been released but they are all clearly influenced by A better tomorrow's style and direction.
Director, John Woo who made numerous "heroic bloodshed" movies in Hong Kong, such as the killers, bullet in the head and hard boiled, all classics which have strong cult following. John Woo defined Slow-mo gun play, visceral action scenes and made a star out of Chow yun fat.
Most people will know both stars better from work on Face/off (John Woo, good but nothing compared to his Hong Kong work), and Mission impossible (John Woo). Chow Yun Fat starred in Crouching tiger hidden dragon.
John Woo is a legend and without him, mayhem in an action scene wouldn't be quite the same.
