Review of A Better Life (2011) by Ryan O — 29 Nov 2011
Regardless of your views on the hot button immigration issue of illegal aliens from Mexico, A Better Life is an outstanding drama detailing the challenges that these individuals face when they come to this country to make a better life for themselves and their family. Despite falling into some predictable pitfalls that at times plays like a "message" movie, the film is redeemed by quiet, yet powerful performances that are top notch.
This is a genuine father/son film that is heartfelt and moving. If nothing else, this film should generate some conversation among viewers as to the plight of the undocumented Mexican worker. This film strips away the negative stereotypes and offers a portrait of a hard working individual dealing with the day-to-day struggles of supporting a family and avoiding the law. While it doesn't seek to provide answers to the problem, it does paint a picture in a sympathetic way. I highly recommend it.
