Take "The Bicycle Thief" set in 1940s Italy, move it to current time Los Angeles, replace the bike with a landscaping truck, and you've got "A Better Life." Predictable plot and stereotypical immigrant cliches nearly overwhelm Demian Bichir's touching and noble performance as a father who risks a lot to improve his son's chances in life.
