Review of A Beautiful Mind (2001) by Elliott F — 07 Apr 2011
No matter how you look at it, A Beautiful Mind is a good movie, just good. Inoffensive, nice, moving, slightly thought-provoking, and good. Russell Crowe stars as John Nash, a brilliant mathematical genius, who is diagnosed with schizophrenia.
The film documents his lowest points in the disease and his return to a somewhat normal life, accompanied along the journey by his wife Alicia (Jennifer Connelly, who won an Oscar for her performance).
Directed with competency by actor-turned-director Ron Howard, A Beautiful Mind is a worthwhile movie. It's not particularly challenging (or, apparently, historically accurate) but it contains what might be Russell Crowe's best performance (he won an Oscar the year before for 2000's Gladiator, but if he hadn't, he almost certainly would have won for this), a very good performance by Jennifer Connelly, who plays the proverbial suffering wife well, and a respectful, if whitewashed, look at schizophrenia.
Best Picture of the year? Probably not. But it's still a film worth checking out.
