Ron Howard's directing style is really hit-and-miss for me, he possesses very little dynamic in his basic and generally stoic style, and the story is obviously Oscar-bait, but Russel Crowe is fantastic, and single-handedly saves it from being shit.
I still can't believe this beat Mulholland Dr. for the best director award in 2001.
