Review of $9.99 (2009) by Dickie L — 07 Aug 2009
Stop animation feature doesn't quite transcend its short story origins, especially not in the way that Jellyfish did - another film based on the short stories of Etgar Keret. Whereas the interweaving tales in Jellyfish culminated into something profound, $9.
99 remains a series of vignettes waiting for a thread. Perhaps the claymation process takes some of the humanness out of Keret's characters. There are nice moments of wry humour, but these fleeting observations don't form into a satisfying whole.
