Review of 99 Homes (2015) by Vinay V — 20 Dec 2015
Quite a wonderful movie to start off the break. Hard hitting and electric, the movie takes a look at the US economic crisis from the lens of homeowners, the ones who have had their home foreclosed. Quite the opposite view from Margin Call that came from a banker's view point, this one is through the eyes of a foreclosed houseowner in the form of Andrew Garfield, now having shed his Spidey costume, plays the blue collar carpenter who has his dream stolen away in front of his eyes through a charismatically corrupt real estate shark played with delicious unhinged glee by Michael Shannon.
Striking a deal with the devil, Garfield begins to work with Michael Shannon and is gradually drawn into the shady slimy web of manipulation and crookery while trying to retain control of his soul. A fantastic movie especially the 1st 15 mins, the rawness of which sucks you right in for the ride.
