Review of 90 Minutes in Heaven (2015) by Greg B — 11 Sep 2015
"90 Minutes in Heaven" is a Christian-based film about a minister (Hayden Christensen) who is pronounced dead in a car crash and allegedly visits Heaven while dead. Kate Bosworth supports Christensen as his devoted wife who is put through the ringer during Christensen's bouts of self pity and hopelessness.
Though I thought the film had a good message, it also felt self-aggrandizing and with an over-inflated sense of itself. The road to recovery after injury is an emotionally taxing one, and this film thinks it has something fresh to say, but it really doesn't.
It feels like the film misses the mark somewhere and doesn't really accomplish what is sets forth to. In film circles we call that a sloppy execution. Christensen also can't hold a lead role together and was honestly stronger as Anakin Skywalker.
He is a B-list actor and can't bring the conviction he needs to this role. What we get is a whiny, self-righteous poor me story for someone who could have had it a lot worse. This is not a terrible film; just arrogant in itself ------------------------------------------- C+.
