Review of 9 Songs (2004) by Hayley B — 13 Jun 2007
I went on for the longest time defending this film from being classified as pornography. I've decided not to defend it anymore. Yeah... I guess it is pornography. I mean, there are full penetration scenes, and yes, it gets you hot.
But it's also not entirely about sex. It really is a more gritty look at what short-term, stylish, artificial-love relationships are. I think Winterbottom does a wonderful job showing just how relationships can turn into asymmetrical love, and what that means for both man and woman in differing positions of power in the relationship.
So the question is, was the sex necessary to convey this? My answer: No, but honestly, I think it would have been a hell of a lot harder without the sex, as sex is integral to any passionate relationship.
