Review of 9 Songs (2004) by Tad T — 13 Dec 2007
Disappointingly cold film from Winterbottom. The idea sounds unbeatable on paper, but the problem is that it is impossible to understand why these two carry on their affair for as long as they do... The sex is passionless and heavy on artifice, their shared enthusiasm for music gets lost among the massive crowds at the Brixton Academy, and the two lead characters are portrayed without depth or ingenuity.
When Matt runs naked into icy-cold surf to proclaim his love for Lisa it seems more like a first-date prank than a genuine expression of affection. And Lisa is so self-absorbed you wonder whether she's actually even noticing Matt is there as a human being.
Maybe that's the point of the film... but then why waste 69 minutes of our time on it? Nevertheless, beautifully shot and some of the concert footage is so immediate it almost makes up for the rest.
