Review of 8MM (1999) by Brad G — 02 May 2010
After the neon goofiness of Batman & Robin, director Joel Schumacher snagged the first dark and dangerous script he could find and Se7en maestro Andrew Kevin Walkerâ??s bleak, smutty 8MM fit the bill.
Does he redeem himself of those perky Bat-nipples? Not quite. I love the set up. Nicolas Cageâ??s gumshoe is hired by the widow of some rich muckety-muck to investigate a snuff film sheâ??s uncovered in her husbandâ??s effects.
The mystery takes Cage from Miami to Pennsylvania to Hollywood to New York City. Or at least, the porno shops and S&M clubs of those cities. The film goes on for too long, the mysteryâ??s resolution is boring, and there are at least two climaxes too many.
Meh. VF.
