Review of 8MM (1999) by Rhys G — 07 Aug 2010
Screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker follows up his previous hit Se7en with another suspense film set in the urban underworld. Nic Cage makes an intense protagonist, but while his previous movie was set to David Fincher's steely eye for detail, 8mm is given an uneven ride with Joel Schumacher, who is both credited and decried for favoring flash over substance.
Underground Los Angeles is a variable Dante's Inferno, populated by some very eerie characters (Peter Stormare in fake fingernails, with an Italian accent. 'Nuff said), but atmosphere alone can't bring the mystery to a conclusion.
