Despite a stunted Nic Cage performance (say what you will) and a misguided, amateurish look and feel thanks to the e'er-incompetent Joel Schumacher, the material manages to shine through. And my God: it is harrowing, it is horrific.
There are no winners, and there is no escape. Even trying to fathom there being a world like this out there is mind-numbing.
