Review of 88 Minutes (2007) by Andrew C — 31 Dec 2010
A good character has many "suitcases." A great character has a particular suitcase left unopen. One that collects dust. Locked away. A suitcase lost, or forgot, or one not wanting to be found. The beauty comes from "unpacking" that particular suitcase.
How does this play out? Well, in a literal sense, you create a character and in Act 1 you establish that he's scared of heights (for example). By Act 4 you want to make sure you get him up high - real high. There's entertainment value in that. Al Pacino is the kind of actor who constantly seeks out those type of roles: Scarface, The Godfather, The Merchant of Venice, Richard III, Insomnia...88 Minutes. It's a mind bender. Two thumbs up.
