Review of 8 Women (2002) by Ryan M — 08 Jul 2010
A murder mystery....musical? That could never work, director Francois Ozon knows this too, so the musical numbers are all short (8, one for each female character) with some bland music and purposely naff dancing to make it all very silly.
The mystery begins when a man is found with a dagger in his back in his large mansion, 8 women are all suspected for various reasons, plenty of secrets are revealed and motives for murder are all eked out from everyone, leaving one too many loose strands that aren't fully tied up at the end of the film, which makes the mystery aspect slightly disappointing.
What really makes this watchable is the cast, 8 french actresses who are either talented or beautiful (or both) from the young (Sagnier and Ledoyen, 23 and 26 respectively) to, the near middle-aged (Beart, 39), to the older (Richard, Deneuve, Huppert and Ardant, between 49 and 59 years old) and the really old (Darrieux, 85).
They all dive into the film with great energy, inciting cat fights, arguments and a few bottles smashed onto heads and even some odd flirting thrown in there. It doesn't go as over-the-top with the silliness as it should, but still worth a look for some fine acting.
