Review of '71 (2014) by Lewis E — 23 Mar 2015
Jack O'Connell makes a change from his hot-tempered adolescent thug but at the same time makes less impact as a soldier stranded in Belfast during the Irish Troubles. Although the film does a decent job creating the sense of vulnerability, his character's short-lived engagement with other characters and lack of strong traits gives him little dominance and central focus.
therefore hindering the conveyance of his traumatic experience lying at the heart of the story. Other aspects of the narrative aren't quite good enough to make up for it either. '71' is redeemed by a handful of powerful scenes but after all the hype I certainly expected better.
