Review of '71 (2014) by Jordan R — 24 Mar 2015
An excellent bare bones survival thriller that doesn't waste time with character or plot development. In many genres this lack of development would be a bad thing, but here I find it works since it allows the audience to focus on the moment and soak in the tension, without any distractions.
My only problem with this film was the inclusion of the single father element of the story, since I thought that it could be removed without affecting the story at all. I assume it was meant to make the main character more sympathetic, but I think it needed more screen time to make it effective.
As it stood in the film, the scene could have been removed completely and it would not have had any effect on my perception of the character at all. I also though the ending dragged on longer than it should have.
Those small opinions aside, I really enjoyed this film.
