Review of '71 (2014) by Prentice S — 26 Sep 2015
Jack O'Connell is going to have a good career. I didn't see "Unbroken," but it certainly introduced him into the mainstream. Now, with "'71," O'Connell delivers a blistering performance that demonstrates how easily he can carry a film.
"'71" is a seat-gripper- you really have no idea what's going to happen as a British solider is accidentally abandoned in Belfast during "the Troubles," which saw extreme violence between the English and Irish over religion.
O'Connell brings an immensely humanity to his character, as he struggles to survive off the reluctant kindness of some Irishmen. The entire cast helps tie the story together, with love, bloodshed, and a lack of trust that makes this thriller easily one of the strongest this year.
