Review of '71 (2014) by James S — 25 Mar 2016
A blistering, tense tale of a novice soldier left behind in the back streets of Belfast at the height of the Troubles. From the very first moments on the streets we're in no doubt about the real, immediate and savage danger he is in, except it becomes increasingly clear that the so-called enemy may not be the worst thing he has to worry about.
Jack O'Connell is fabulous as Gary Hook, whose naivety is quickly swept aside and his primal survival instincts set in. Struggling to stay alive and still not sink into barbarism, he's our eyes and ears into the shocking brutality and dark heart of this war zone. He's in mortal danger in almost every scene, and the conclusion doesn't make it all better. Highly recommended.
