Review of 61* (2001) by Glenn S — 09 Jan 2008
This movie will go down as one of my favorite sports movies. It does an excellent job at telling one of baseball's most compelling story's: the 1961 single season home run race. It really captures Maris and Mantle and their interactions with the media, fans, people in baseball and most importantly with each other.
Pepper and Jane do a great job respectively with Maris and Mantle. My only complaint is the inclusion of McGwire breaking the record that bookends the movie but this movie was made after the fact and can't be faulted much for it.
Just like those who recognize Aaron's accomplishment's despite being "broken", I hope people remember the remarkable and trying season Maris had that was only "broken" by those suspected of steroids.
The record is really irrelevant as long as baseball never forgets Roger Maris' great season as one it's finest moments.
